General Motors: A Wave of Disturbing Recalls

Last month, General Motors issued recall notices for nearly 5 million vehicles. The most important recall centred around an ignition switch, that was found to be capable of returning to the OFF position, and preventing airbags from deploying. This defect is responsible for 13 deaths. Mary Barra certainly does not have a fun job ahead of her. Having only taken over the presidency of General Motors in January, she now must manage the most important crisis that the manufacturer has faced since it was put back on track by the U.S. government during the financial crisis. Now, she must appear before Congress to explain. She must explain why the particular design of the ignition switch had been changed, and why the company did not issue a recall on older vehicles. Investigators are still going over the chain of events. Who approved the design? Who was responsible for recalls and why were the vehicles not recalled? Who was aware of the problem? We do know that GM had been aware of the problem since 2001. Why is it that over a decade later, GM has decided to take responsibility?

GM Sweeps 2014 North American Car And Truck Of The Year

It's that time of year again. Along with the major auto shows in Detroit, Toronto and Montreal, come the awards. One of the highlights of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, is the crowning of the king and queen of the industry by a panel of automotive journalists. This year, Chevrolet took both crowns with their Corvette Stingray and Silverado, being named the 2014 North American Car and Truck of the Year (respectively) this week. It's unusual for any one badge to sweep the awards. Ford did in 2010 and Honda in 2006. GM took all in 2007, but across two brands, Saturn and Chevy. This year was GM's sixth Car of the Year trophy, and fourth Truck of the Year since the awards were created in 1994. GM holds the most wins (10), with Ford hot on their heels with 9.
