GM Sweeps 2014 North American Car And Truck Of The Year

It's that time of year again. Along with the major auto shows in Detroit, Toronto and Montreal, come the awards. One of the highlights of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, is the crowning of the king and queen of the industry by a panel of automotive journalists. This year, Chevrolet took both crowns with their Corvette Stingray and Silverado, being named the 2014 North American Car and Truck of the Year (respectively) this week. It's unusual for any one badge to sweep the awards. Ford did in 2010 and Honda in 2006. GM took all in 2007, but across two brands, Saturn and Chevy. This year was GM's sixth Car of the Year trophy, and fourth Truck of the Year since the awards were created in 1994. GM holds the most wins (10), with Ford hot on their heels with 9.

The 2013 Chevrolet Trax

Chevrolet is out to conquer a new vehicle segment—compact SUVs—with the launch of the Chevy Trax. As part of the American car maker's global range, it can be seen at the Paris Motor Show. Just 4.25 metres long, 1.77 metres wide and with a 2.55-metre wheelbase, the Trax offers 358 litres of cargo space. The car maker is betting on the vehicle's practicality to make a splash. Its rear seats fold down, as does the front passenger seat, to provide a total 1,370 litres of cargo room. With Trax touting its great practicality and flexibility, it also offers additional under-floor storage.

Chevy's 2015 Trax Small Crossover

Crossovers are huge right now, doubling in sales since 2009. Hoping to grab a piece of that market, Chevy is bringing their Trax small crossover to the U.S.. The Trax is already sold around the world, in 60 markets actually including Canada. It's built on the same platform as the Chevy Sonic and the Buick Encore, and runs on the same four-cylinder 1.4-litre turbo engine as the Encore. Launched in early 2013, the Encore has been highly successful for GM. The compact crossover market is still in it's infancy, at least when it comes to mainstream brands. Honda is planning one based on the Fit, and Jeep will launch the Renegade early next year. The Trax's closest existing competitor is the Nissan Juke, which is of similar size. Luxury brands, however, are jumping into the market with both feet, with small crossovers being offered by Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Lincoln.
