General Motors: A Wave of Disturbing Recalls

Last month, General Motors issued recall notices for nearly 5 million vehicles. The most important recall centred around an ignition switch, that was found to be capable of returning to the OFF position, and preventing airbags from deploying. This defect is responsible for 13 deaths. Mary Barra certainly does not have a fun job ahead of her. Having only taken over the presidency of General Motors in January, she now must manage the most important crisis that the manufacturer has faced since it was put back on track by the U.S. government during the financial crisis. Now, she must appear before Congress to explain. She must explain why the particular design of the ignition switch had been changed, and why the company did not issue a recall on older vehicles. Investigators are still going over the chain of events. Who approved the design? Who was responsible for recalls and why were the vehicles not recalled? Who was aware of the problem? We do know that GM had been aware of the problem since 2001. Why is it that over a decade later, GM has decided to take responsibility?

2013 Chevy Spark

Aimed directly at the young urban driver, the 2013 Chevy Spark is a sub-compact car with good interior space that’s fun to drive and very affordable. This wee car, at just over 4.4 metres long, has a cute, yet sporty exterior and comes in eight colours with names like Jalapeño, Lemonade and Denim. The elongated headlights, 15-inch alloy wheels and nearly-invisible rear door handles give an interesting look that is sure to attract attention. The top trim model, 2LT, adds several exterior touches, including fog lights, chrome trim, minor front and rear facia updates and roof rails. Stepping into the car reveals that although the price tag is low, the attention to detail is not. Instead of a stark and plain finish that might be expected, driver and passengers are greeted with colour-accented seats, dash and door panels along with cleanly-designed tech touches.

Next Generation Chevrolet Niva Concept

At the 2014 Moscow Motor Show, Chevy unveiled it's newest concept, the Niva. Chevrolet has officially unveiled the next generation Niva Concept during the 2014 Moscow International Auto Salon, in a world premiere. The Niva, which is a joint venture between General Motors and AvtoVaz, Lada's parent company. Lada, has been in production sine 1998. Lada is now owned by Nissan/Renault. In the past, this 4x4 had a reputation of being both reliable and simple to fix, but prone to rust and not very capable off-road. The Niva is a big seller in Europe, thanks to it's rugged look.
