2013 Chevy Spark

Aimed directly at the young urban driver, the 2013 Chevy Spark is a sub-compact car with good interior space that’s fun to drive and very affordable. This wee car, at just over 4.4 metres long, has a cute, yet sporty exterior and comes in eight colours with names like Jalapeño, Lemonade and Denim. The elongated headlights, 15-inch alloy wheels and nearly-invisible rear door handles give an interesting look that is sure to attract attention. The top trim model, 2LT, adds several exterior touches, including fog lights, chrome trim, minor front and rear facia updates and roof rails. Stepping into the car reveals that although the price tag is low, the attention to detail is not. Instead of a stark and plain finish that might be expected, driver and passengers are greeted with colour-accented seats, dash and door panels along with cleanly-designed tech touches.

The Ten Best Interiors, As Determined By WardsAuto

The editors of American magazine WardsAuto have been determining the top ten best engines in automotive production for the past twenty years. A little less known about them is that they have also been choosing the ten best interiors too. Based on factors such as quality of materials, ergonomics, comfort, safety, value, fit & finish and overall design, Wards has been compiling this list for three years now. Points were also awarded for the user-friendliness of a car's machine-human interface, as well as the ability to integrate mobile phones and access information. This year the magazine evaluated 46 vehicles with all new or significantly upgraded interiors. In the past, a car's interior was often considered to be an easy mark for auto manufacturers looking to trim manufacturing costs. More recently though, automakers are beginning to understand that drivers spend much more time looking at their car's interior, than the outside.

Chevy Targets LGBT Customers

While the LGBT community has become more visible, embraced and even celebrated in this country, some companies have been hesitant to market to this group, wary of offending their more conservative customers. During the Olympics, held in LGTB-phobic Russia, Chevy took the bold step of broadcasting a commercial that focused on families, several of them headed by gay and lesbian couples. The ad, titled "The New Us" was seen as a breakthrough by marketing experts, prompting some to predict that it will open the door for other automakers to follow suit. The spot, featuring the Traverse crossover, was produced by an ad agency that focuses on connecting brands with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender market. Of the 12 couples in the ad, three were headed by gay couples. Chevy's ad is seen as a valuable test case. Number crunchers found that Chevy gained net positive sentiment among general viewership, and significantly more among the LGBT population. The company did take a hit from some who disliked the company showing what was seen as the brand's support for gay marriage as a political cause.
